MFC Presents: Layering
Layers of creativity. Layers of sound. Layers of meaning.
MFC Presents:
Layers of creativity. Layers of sound. Layers of meaning.
Immerse yourself in a multi-sensory, multi-medium exploration of the role layering plays in creative production. This event superimposes layered vocals from theatre devising to medieval chants and contemporary rounds, the visual arts, and the evocative power of layered soundscapes.
Join practitioners from Southwark Playhouse along with visual artist Constança Saturnino, vocalist Vivien Ellis, and musician Gawain Hewitt as they guide you through a day of interwoven creativity. Engage in visual arts workshops, immerse yourself in layered vocal experiences, and witness the creation of dynamic soundscapes using traditional instruments and digital tools. Experience how each artistic element accretes with the others creating, over the course of the day, a rich and resonant whole. Discover the interplay between different creative mediums and the overarching theme of "layering" as the day unfolds.
Free and Open to All.

Meet our practitioners…
Southwark Playhouse
We are pleased to announce an upcoming partnership with Southwark Playhouse to provide a season of upcoming Theatre sessions at the Dragon Café.
Established in 1993, Southwark Playhouse has become London’s leading fringe theatre presenting work by the best new and emerging theatre practitioners based in, or visiting, the capital. We curate and produce a diverse programme of productions throughout the year, telling entertaining and thought-provoking stories from an array of voices.
With two venues in Elephant & Castle (Southwark Playhouse Borough and Southwark Playhouse Elephant), everything we do as an organisation is driven by our belief that theatre exists to inspire, to empower, to challenge and to entertain.
Gawain Hewitt
Gawain Hewitt is an artist and composer, particularly known for combining technology with more traditional musical and artistic practices. He is prolific in his output, much of which is composed or made in the community. Gawain’s work has been shown at Spitalfields Festival, the V&A and the Tate Modern and he is an active member of the London based Hackoustic group. Gawain has made music in diverse settings, from compositions for Soprano, Recorder and Oboe, to UK hip hop, to making music with with code and hydrophones on and in a frozen fjord with Terje Isungset and Arve Hendriksen in the headline concert at Ice Music Festival.
Constança Saturnino
Constança is an interdisciplinary artist, choreographer, dancer, and handpoke tattooist born in Lisbon and currently based in London. She graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Contemporary Dance in 2020, where her passion for visual arts and movement led her to develop a methodology that unites these mediums. By weaving her drawing and movement practices with explorations of earthen and organic materials, Constança creates deeply personal and tactile works that reflect her complex relationship with nature and self.
Vivien Ellis
Vivien is a singer and early English music practitioner who combines a passion for performing early music and folk song with a desire to share this with everyone, and a belief that singing is our birthright, bringing benefits to health and general wellbeing. Since 2014 Vivien has led a weekly drop-in Singing Group for wellbeing at The Dragon Café. The Singing Group is there for anyone who wants to come along, it truly is a meeting of raised voices and open hearts, a place to recharge and connect with others.
