Listening, a special day-long event on Saturday 12th July 2025 as part of Waterloo Festival. The day is conceived in two phases, distinct yet interconnected, inviting you first to immerse yourself in the vibrant Waterloo Festival creative community through a series of group events, and then, together again as a community, we will immerse ourselves in a world of sound and listening.

Phase I: DEEP. Focusing deeply on being in community.
12:00pm to 7:00pm

The first part of the day is dedicated to making space for deep human connections and our wellbeing. Join us in and around the beautiful grounds of St John’s Waterloo for a series of free, engaging activities designed for everyone. Highlights include:· Sketching in the Open Air: The London Group exhibiting artist Barbara Beyer leads a free and relaxed outdoor sketching session in the Churchyard Garden of St John’s Waterloo.· #Love ESOL Picnic: a relaxed afternoon picnic where you can practise English, meet new people, and find out about free language classes in the community (In partnership with ESOL).· Community Storytelling: unwind in the beautiful churchyard garden at St John’s Waterloo and let yourself be transported into a world of myth, legend, and folklore by talented storytellers from St John’s Waterloo based-project, Space for Storytelling.

Throughout the day, learn more about the vital work of Mental Fight Club and St John’s Waterloo, and discover our upcoming Creative Salons, a series of events into Autumn and Winter dedicated to sparking conversation and creativity. You will also have the chance to check out all the free exhibitions at Waterloo Festival.

Throughout the day, listen…“how a community of people listens is what creates their culture.” (Pauline Oliveros, 2003)

Phase II: Listening. An evening of immersive experimental sound.
4pm to 10:30pm

As daylight begins to fade, our focus will shift inward for an exploration of sound, curated in partnership with the acclaimed experimental music and art platform, IKLECTIK. Pioneered by composer Pauline Oliveros, Deep Listening is the art of paying radical attention to the world of sound, an attentiveness that fosters profound awareness, connection, and creativity. By focusing on the entire sonic environment, deep listening transforms the simple act of hearing into a practice of being. Highlights include:· Deep Listening Workshop with Dan Johnson: a deep dive into the art of listening in this intimate workshop held within the Old Crypt at St John’s Waterloo. More information soon.· IKLECTIK presents An Evening Concert: a special concert programmed by IKLECTIK, renowned for pushing the boundaries of sound and performance.
