Ever wondered how a piece of fabric and a sculpted head can suddenly "come to life"? Join MFC and St John’s Waterloo for an immersive day exploring the art of puppetry and the fascinating ways we project our stories onto the world around us.

As part of our constant drive to ensure all of our sessions are accessible to all community members all of our workshops will be supported by a BSL translator.

12:30 PM – 2:00 PM | Finding the Voice and Giving It Form

In this hands-on session, you won’t just build a puppet - you’ll find its voice. Using the voice as a stimulus, participants will craft a character’s head.

2pm: Refreshments Break

2:20pm – 4:00pm | Movement and the Evolving Character

With a simple blanket for a body and your own hand as the soul of the character, you’ll learn to tell stories through improvisation.

4:00 PM – 5:00 PM | Masks, Puppets and the Inner Caveman

A captivating and entertaining interactive lecture and demonstration. Russell Dean dives into the "hands-on" science of how our brains make meaning. Discover the "perceptual rules of thumb" (heuristics) that govern how we see the world and why becoming aware of these shortcuts is vital for narrative creation.

About Russell Dean: Russell Dean is Artistic Director of Strangeface. He makes masks, puppets and theatre. Recent show work includes The Hit, (a Welcome Trust funded exploration of cognitive dissonance), Eli and the Golem, and creating puppets forThe Sex Life of Puppets with Blind Summit. Aside from making masks and puppets for schools and colleges, he is currrently creating a full mask show Turf for the National Puppet Theatre of Latvia.
